Struvite recovery from anaerobically digested waste-activated sludge: A short review

چکیده

Abstract Effective treatment of waste streams such as municipal waste-activated sludge (WAS) presents an opportunity for energy and nutrient recovery, water reclamation, mitigation climate change. WAS is a product the activated (AST) process widely used wastewater. Currently, disposal account up to 50% total operation cost 40% greenhouse gas emissions from wastewater plants. Anaerobic digestion (AD) usually preferred since it more economical compared other existing technologies. The decomposition during AD releases nutrients, which are then discharged in anaerobic effluent, polluting recipient bodies increasing burden. mainly nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), can be crystallised into struvite (magnesium ammonium phosphate, NH 4 MgPO .6H 2 O) with numerous agricultural applications fertilisers. present review focusses on recovery anaerobically digested its potential application crop production. Overcoming challenges to struvite recovery from anaerobically digested dairy manure.

Recovering struvite from dairy manure has consistently posed problems for researchers. This study separated solids from anaerobically digested dairy manure using a filtration system. Filtrate was rich in free magnesium (160 to 423 mg/L), ammonium (320 to 1800 mg N/L) and orthophosphate (93 to 332 mg P/L). High concentrations of free calcium (128 to 361 mg/L) and alkalinity (3309 to 6567 mg/L as...

Ammonia removal from anaerobically digested dairy manure by struvite precipitation

Ammonia is one of the most important contaminants impairing the quality of water resources. When this is considered along with the fact that the global demand for nitrogenous fertilizers is in constant rise, the need for recovery as well as removal of nitrogen is well justified. Crystallization of N and P in the form of struvite (MgNH4PO4 6H2O), which is a slow releasing and valuable fertilizer...

Removal of ammonium and phosphate from the supernatant of anaerobically digested waste activated sludge by chemical precipitation.

The removal of ammonium (NH(4)(+)) and phosphate (PO(4)(3-)) from supernatant of anaerobic digestion by magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) formation was studied. To be able to find out the loss of NH(4)(+) by its transformation to NH(3), rates of NH(4)(+) removal by aeration and by MAP formation combined with aeration were compared. NH(4)(+) removal by aeration was found to be insignificant. Th...

Bioremediation of reject water from anaerobically digested waste water sludge with macroalgae (Ulva lactuca, Chlorophyta).

Phosphorus and biologically active nitrogen are valuable nutrient resources. Bioremediation with macroalgae is a potential means for recovering nutrients from waste streams. In this study, reject water from anaerobically digested sewage sludge was successfully tested as nutrient source for cultivation of the green macroalgae Ulva lactuca. Maximal growth rates of 54.57±2.16% FW d(-1) were achiev...

Struvite precipitation potential for nutrient recovery from anaerobically treated wastes.

Geochemical equilibrium speciation modeling was used to determine optimum conditions for precipitation of magnesium ammonium phosphate, or struvite, for the recovery of nutrients from anaerobically digested wastes. Despite a wide range of pH values with the potential to precipitate struvite, the optimum pH was determined to be 9.0. Bench experiments conducted on effluent from an anaerobic seque...
